Last year, we introduced Crystal "Diamond" zirconia as the most translucent zirconia material offered in the market, specifically designed for full-contour restorations. At 850 MPa, Diamond exceeds the strength of ALL other monolithic dental ceramics by 2-7 times, and exceeds the ADA minimum strength standards for dental ceramics by more than 17 times (see ISO-6872 / ANSI/ADA No 69 specification).Whereas most medical applications of zirconia focus entirely on strength and durability as the key characterists of the material, what makes zirconia particularly interesting for dental applications is that unlike metal substructures for crowns and bridges, zirconia is light-transparent, allowing us to create a more natural looking restoration. Additionally, the amount of transparency of the material can be adjusted by changing the ingredients and processes slightly with minimal affect on other properties of the material.
Unlike other dental zirconia manufacturers who create a one-size-fits all approach to manufacturing zirconia, from the very beginning, we decided to develop at least two flavors of Crystal Zirconia, a high strength formula which focusses on maximum thoeretical strength of zirconia, and a high translucency formula which took translucency to a new level. We realized early on that connectors for posterior bridge frameworks required more strength than anterior copings, and anterior copings benefited from the most translucency possible.
In experimenting with more and more translucent mixtures of zirconia, however, we also knew that it was aesthetically possible to create a full-contour restoration which was AS aesthetically interesting as porcelain layered restorations. Although some pioneering work with full-contour zirconia was being done by others, most were using a less-transparent material and getting very strong but aesthetically mixed results. After testing with our original high-translucency formula (the most translucent zirconia made at the time), we felt that we needed to improve the formula even more before recommending the material for full-contour designs, and this began a year-long series of batch testing which finally resulted in Diamond.
With the introduction of Diamond, we made a major leap-forward in translucency while reducing the strength properties by only 10-15% compared to our HT formula. As a result, Diamond restorations are the FIRST and ONLY full-contour zirconia restorations which meed the demanding aesthetic standards of cosmetic dentists. and the FIRST and ONLY restoration which can confidently offer a full lifetime breakage warranty (on the entire restoration, not just the substructure).
